The Best Hiking / Camping water filter

The best portable water filter for campers and hikers

Ready to hit the great outdoors but can't possibly take enough water with you to keep you hydrated?  Well you have some options.  You could risk it and just drink the cleanest water you can find.  We don't recommend this, water born pathogens and bacteria are a BIG deal. For the last few decades as our water supplies have become more contaminated boiling water has been a popular method.  The problem with this is you have to make a fire every time you want to decontaminate some water, not to mention carrying a container to boil it in.

There's also Aquamira Water Purifier Tablets .  These suckers are nice in a pinch but the taste can be a turn off, and you have to carry enough for your whole trip.

Well there's a couple products that will last most people a lifetime of camping.

Best Camping Water filter for groups.

The best reusable water filter is made by a company called Katadyn it can be used over and over again and has a simple pump system.  You place the plastic tube with a prefilter in a possibly contaminated water source and then simply pump the water through the filter into any medium you want, a pot, a water bottle, or the ever handy Hydration Pack .

Katadyn make a variety of these filters but the one at the left is one of the best,  it is light easy to use and will filter 50,000 liters or water.  Easy to clean a versatile it is a sure winner.

They've grown to be the number one producer of these type of products with a global marketshare of over 50%!

Best Personal Water Filter for Campers

best hiking water filterOk if the Katadyn type product is a little out of your price range like it is for me and you want something simplier take a serious look at LifeStraw   It is by far the best personal water filter on the market.  It has won Invention of the Year by Time magazine.  It can filter a TON of water well, 2000 liters or so.

There are no batteries, no motors, no moving parts just suck through one end while the other is in a water source.  It may require a few seconds of sucking before you get any water as it filters through.

Don't forget to have fun in the great outdoors.
